Summary

2021 - Did not finish。 I don't think it was the fact I was reading this in ebook format - I just did not feel engaged by any of the characters so gave up on it。 Which is sad because it is regency period and paranormal - two things that I normally like in a book。 I just couldn't read beyond page 180。 I know there are a lot of people who loved it - and will possibly try it again in the future。 2021 - Did not finish。 I don't think it was the fact I was reading this in ebook format - I just did not feel engaged by any of the characters so gave up on it。 Which is sad because it is regency period and paranormal - two things that I normally like in a book。 I just couldn't read beyond page 180。 I know there are a lot of people who loved it - and will possibly try it again in the future。 。。。more

I read this on a road trip to Wisconsin from Colorado。 My mom's bf-at-the-time Richard more or less tricked us into joining him for his family reunion。 Driving through Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and then Wisconsin is like driving through the Flintstones backgrounds that loop continuously。 Richard's parents kept referring to us as his "family" (they had been dating less than a year) and my brother and I slept in the most orange room I've ever seen。 My mom stayed in the room where Richard's mom kept I read this on a road trip to Wisconsin from Colorado。 My mom's bf-at-the-time Richard more or less tricked us into joining him for his family reunion。 Driving through Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and then Wisconsin is like driving through the Flintstones backgrounds that loop continuously。 Richard's parents kept referring to us as his "family" (they had been dating less than a year) and my brother and I slept in the most orange room I've ever seen。 My mom stayed in the room where Richard's mom kept her doll collection。 I thought this book would last me through the whole trip but I finished it halfway through。 The utter disappointment of having no more book to distract myself was, perhaps, the strongest I've ever felt any singular emotion in my life, ever。 。。。more

(3。5 stars) I really enjoyed this book! The only reason why I didn't give it four stars is because it could have been a lot shorter - and normally length isn't an issue for me but I found myself skimming over a lot of irrelevant details。 The footnotes, on the other hand, were a great addition to the story。 Overall, it was a nice read and I didn't mind that it didn't really pick up in action until later in the book。 Reading the first half felt like watching a period drama with your mom just for t (3。5 stars) I really enjoyed this book! 4。5AUGH。 so intricately, beautifully thought out。 It's like if Pride and Prejudice was way cooler and ten times more beautiful。 From the very beginning there's such a magical feeling flowing through the pages, despite trying to act like a dull history book。 (the audiobook is like 45 hours long, but it's the sort of magical journey that I would listen to forever and ever。 If you liked pride and prejudice you cannot go wrong with Jonathon Strange and Mr。 Norrell) 4。5AUGH。 so intricately, beautifully thought out。 It's like if Pride and Prejudice was way cooler and ten times more beautiful。 From the very beginning there's such a magical feeling flowing through the pages, despite trying to act like a dull history book。 (the audiobook is like 45 hours long, but it's the sort of magical journey that I would listen to forever and ever。 If you liked pride and prejudice you cannot go wrong with Jonathon Strange and Mr。 Norrell) 。。。more

Very very long book :) written in a regency/victorian style about magic。 Very inventive。Overall the writing style is incredible! The book is quite enjoyable, though I would have liked it more if the focus was more on the characters and their thoughts, emotions and desires。 As it is, it felt a bit detached。 It is also very very long, and it could have easily been shorted by at least 200 pages if the author had chosen to (it felt like a case of using a sentence, when a word would do)。Enjoyable non Very very long book :) written in a regency/victorian style about magic。 Very inventive。Overall the writing style is incredible! 32 hour long audiobook and I understand why。 This book is packed with footnotes, giving much more information then one could think of - well, except the author of course。 Overall a true masterpiece。 These kind of books are why I am so hesitant to give other books five stars because it is so well written, thought out, and compelling。 I give it five diamond stars to set it apart from five normal stars。

I listened to this on audio。 Half the time I didn’t know what was going on though I will say I was never bored。 I didn’t love the historical text book style narration。 Perhaps it would have been better on paper。 I am glad I finished it。

After 434/1008 pages, I have decided that this is not my book。 I find this a tedious, long-winding story。 There is no character development, no plot action。 The characters don't come alive for me。 This morning I found myself thinking that I do not care one bit what is going to happen next。 Once every five years or so I come across a book that I am not able to read till the end。 Oh well, why waste my time on a book I don't like? I really wanted to fall head over heels in love with this。 But no such luck。 This is a strange one。 I don't hate this, but I don't love it either。 In fact, the only reason I continued with it was to find out the ending。 And the ending left me very much disappointed。 I really wanted to fall head over heels in love with this。 But no such luck。 This is a strange one。 I don't hate this, but I don't love it either。 In fact, the only reason I continued with it was to find out the ending。 And the ending left me very much disappointed。 。。。more

Enjoyable and light-hearted, Clarke shines her brightest in her character work。 We meet a very full caste of very English gentlemen and ladies, and yet she manages to make each of them distinct and memorable。 She has a way of gently poking fun at each of the characters, even the protagonists, while at the same time elevating the good qualities in them。 It's a very hopeful book, in a way - dark at times, irreverent always, but curious and loving in the same ways as a fairy tale。The novel could be Enjoyable and light-hearted, Clarke shines her brightest in her character work。 We meet a very full caste of very English gentlemen and ladies, and yet she manages to make each of them distinct and memorable。 She has a way of gently poking fun at each of the characters, even the protagonists, while at the same time elevating the good qualities in them。 It's a very hopeful book, in a way - dark at times, irreverent always, but curious and loving in the same ways as a fairy tale。The novel could be condensed a great deal。 That's not to say that there's "wasted space" between its covers, but I'm not sure the novel needed to be as long as it is。 I listened to it on audiobook which I highly recommend, as it's certainly not the sort of book that needs to be pored over in print to fully appreciate。 Clarke goes into detail over a great many things that she doesn't necessarily need to, which means that the reader could cover 100 or so pages and feel like not a whole lot actually happened。 。。。more

4。5 but rounded up to 5 for the sheer joy it gave me。 I loved the academic styling and found the tongue and cheek footnotes to be utterly delightful。 Does this book need to be 1000+ pages? No。 And even though it got a bit slow in some places there was more than enough there to keep me going。 I just very much enjoyed how magic was integrated, the entire concept behind academic magicians vs practical magicians, and the wonderfully realised characters。

The premise of this book pleased me greatly。 Magic set in historical England with dialogue and descriptions of the environment that is consistent with the setting。 The characters are well-written, solid and interesting。The plot in and of itself focuses, or at least begins as, an effort to revive magic in England from the theoretical study of it to practical usage。 With this we are introduced to a set of characters, the chief of which are of course - Mr Norell and Jonathan Strange。 As the story e The premise of this book pleased me greatly。 Magic set in historical England with dialogue and descriptions of the environment that is consistent with the setting。 The characters are well-written, solid and interesting。The plot in and of itself focuses, or at least begins as, an effort to revive magic in England from the theoretical study of it to practical usage。 With this we are introduced to a set of characters, the chief of which are of course - Mr Norell and Jonathan Strange。 As the story evolves, we learn of fairies, a bit about the Napoleonic Wars and a prophecy of the Raven King。There are parts of this book that made me chuckle over and over with the subtle commentary on human behaviour and society。 At times, the tone of dialogue and the social commentary that was sprinkled here and there was reminiscent of other notable authors who have set their stories in similar times。 There are other parts of this book that read like a dissertation。 Particularly the footnotes。 This wasn't as much of an issue for me as I have learned to love footnotes over time。 There were a few though that are so academic that they are very dry, especially in a book about magic。Fair warning, the story is slow, meandering and long。 No really, it's long - as in over a thousand pages long。 I had not myself realised the length of this book before I started on this review。 Somewhere around page 30 my interest had peaked enough for me to continue on with this book, savouring the characters with the plot and get through all of those pages with nary an effort。 But, in saying that, it is not in the least unreasonable to expect any reader to tire at any point in this book。 If you get through a significant portion of this book and it still hasn't caught enough of your interest, I would advise you to stop reading。 But if it does manage to spark a little interest and you get through to the end, you will be left with a book that you will at some point want to revisit in the future。 。。。more

Amazing and enchanting。 Like it really was written at nineteen century。 Real history is entwined with magic and mystery creating unique world。 It was almost perfect if not for the characters。 They arrogant, selfish and overly obsessed with their work。 And yet somehow unable to identify magic when it happens right under their noses。 Too annoying。
